About Seneca

Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and along the shores of Lake Keowee, Seneca offers the perfect blend of small-town charm and natural beauty. With a vibrant downtown, rich history, and thriving local businesses, Seneca is a growing hub for commerce, recreation, and community life in Oconee County.

Seneca was established in 1873 at the intersection of the Blue Ridge Railroad and the Atlanta and Richmond Air Line Railway, with the first train passing through around September 28 of that year. Originally chartered as “Seneca City,” the name was inspired by the nearby 18th-century Cherokee village of Esseneca.
